The Mercia Movement was formed on 19th August 1993 by a group of like-minded individuals alarmed at the political, economic, social and environmental situation in England, but inspired by a common vision of a sustainable alternative future. Anglo-Saxon England provides a vital historical model which proves that a society based on community, organic democracy and environmental harmony is not a dream, but an achievable ideal. An immense amount of energy, patience and flexibility will be needed to realise the ideal and we appeal to the people of Mercia to join us in meeting the challenge. Our vision of community is based on our awareness that individually and collectively we are all parts of a single community upon which both our survival and that of the community itself are dependent and inter-dependent. As we see in nature, everything is connected to everything else. So with human beings, crucially the basis of successful living is dependent on the way we manage that interconnectedness and in the way we behave ourselves and toward each other. We too have power, an effortless power centred in our hearts. We need to be of one spirit in Mercia and with all on the planet and to love the earth, our mother.
